GLO President Zimmermann: Eminent Scholar Melbourne University, November – December 2017.

Klaus F. Zimmermann (Co-Director of POP at UNU-MERIT & Maastricht University), had been granted the prestigious Australian Eminent Research Scholar Award. He was resident in November and December 2017 at The Melbourne Institute of Applied Economic and Social Research of the University of Melbourne, Australia. In November 2017, he was also visiting Macquarie University. Zimmermann is also the President of the Global Labor Organization (GLO).

During his visit, Zimmermann gave research seminars, informal talks and public lectures in Perth, Melbourne, Wollongong, Sydney, Adelaide, Brisbane and Canberra at the University of Western Australia, Melbourne University, the University of Wollongong, Macquarie University, the University of New South Wales, the University of Adelaide, the University of Queensland, conferences of the Asian and Australasian Society of Labour Economics (AASLE) and the Australian Labour Market Research Conference (ALMR), and at Monash University.

Most of his visit to Australia, Zimmermann worked at The Melbourne Institute of the University of Melbourne, in particular with his host, Prof. John Haisken-DeNew. The joint project of the two includes work on migration to Australia. Haisken-DeNew has made a remarkable and global career, with an education in Canada, a PhD thesis with Zimmermann as supervisor at the University of Munich and collaborative work in Mannheim, Munich and Berlin, and key academic positions at the German Economic Institute (DIW Berlin) and as a tenured Full Professor at the University of Bochum, Germany. He is also an Adjunct Professor at McMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. Haisken-DeNew and Zimmermann have a long list of joint research papers and projects, including their co-authored paper “Native Wage Impacts of Foreign Labor: A Random Effects Panel Analysis” in the Journal of Population Economics of 1994 that got 313 Google Scholar cites.

On November 16, Zimmermann gave a public lecture at the Melbourne Institute of Melbourne University on “European Migration: Challenges and Perspectives with a Global View”. Over his visiting period, he had research talks with a larger number of Melbourne University and Melbourne Institute Faculty and visitors, among them many GLO Fellows. Among those were Hilary Hoynes and GLO Fellow Jan van Ours, Barbara Broadway, Diana Contreras Suarez, Nicolas Herault, Jan Kabatek, Inga Lass, Kevin Staub and Mark Wooden.

During a period of two months, Zimmermann was honored by an impressive tour through the academic institutions of Australia with a very warm welcome and respect everywhere. He returned to Bonn on December 19, 2017 with gratitude for the experiences and strong impressions of a wonderful, well organized country with an excellent and ambitious academic community.

Zimmermann spoke at a conference of Asian and Australasian Labor Economists in Canberra

The Asian and Australasian Society of Labour Economics (AASLE) was created to promote research and cooperation in Labour and Applied Economics across Asia and Australasia. The inaugural conference of the AASLE brought together from 7-9 December 2017 over 400 researchers and over 120 papers from around the world. It was hosted by the Australian National University Research School of Economics in Canberra, Australia. The event has been impressive and was a huge success.

The Global Labor Organization (GLO) had supported this initiative and also organized a special GLO session chaired by GLO Country Lead Australia, John Haisken-DeNew (Melbourne University). A large number of GLO Fellows were participating in the event and were presenting papers in various sessions.

The event was organized by Christian Dustmann, University College London; Bob Gregory, Australian National University and GLO; Xin Meng, Australian National University and GLO; John Tang, Australian National University; Matthew Gray, Australian National University.

The 28th Australian Labour Market Research (ALMR) Workshop brought together high-quality labour economic research that engages actively with policy makers. The workshop took place on 6-7 December 2017 at The Realm Hotel, 18 National Circuit Barton, Canberra, Australia. The event was organized by GLO Fellow Boyd Hunter (Centre for Aboriginal Economic Policy Research, Australian National University).

Zimmermann spoke at the University of Queensland, Brisbane

As part of his travel during his tenure as Eminent Scholar and Visiting Professor at Melbourne University and Macquarie University, Klaus F. Zimmermann (Co-Director of POP at UNU-MERIT & Maastricht University & President of the Global Labor Organization, GLO) has also visited Brisbane and spoke at the University of Queensland.

On November 30, 2017 Zimmermann gave a research seminar on “Arsenic Contamination of Drinking Water and Mental Health” in the Applied Economics Seminar Program of the School of Economics perfectly arranged by the Seminar Organizer, Rigissa Megalokonomou. Zimmermann interacted with a strong group of interested and competent applied development and labor economists and econometricians. He enjoyed and benefited from the discussions with Tina Rampino, Anton Pak and GLO Fellows Rigissa Megalokonomou, Jonas Fooken, Nancy Kong, Christiern Rose, and Haishan Yuan, among others.

Zimmermann in Adelaide: The Future of Government & Migration Challenges

During his tenure as Eminent Scholar and Visiting Professor at Melbourne University and Macquarie University, Klaus F. Zimmermann (Co-Director of POP at UNU-MERIT & Maastricht University & President of the Global Labor Organization, GLO) has also been in Adelaide. He had been invited by Kostas Mavromaras, President of the Economic Society of Australia (SA). Mavromaras has also been the Director of the National Institute of Labour Studies and a Professor at Flinders University. He his also a GLO-Fellow and a forthcoming Professor of Economics at the University of Adelaide.

On Monday, November 27, Zimmermann spoke to over 40 government staff members from various departments of the local Government of South Australia (SA) headed Stuart Hocking, Deputy Chief Executive of the Department of Treasury & Finance, SA, about the future of government in the face of globalization. In this exchange, he was supported by Kostas Mavromaras.

In his Public Lecture on November 28 in the Napier Lecture Theatre, the lecture hall of the University of Adelaide, Zimmermann spoke about “The European Migration Challenge”. He was introduced by Professor Gareth Miles, the Head of the School of Economics, who also moderated the discussion. Zimmermann also used the occasion to exchange views with further various distinguished individuals, including Professor Christopher Findlay, Executive Dean, Faculty of the Professions, Nigar Hashimzade (University of Durham), and GLO Fellows Stephane Mahuteau, Eran Binenbaum and Zhang Wei.

Zimmermann discusses population issues in Sydney

Zimmermann discusses migration and aging issues at the ARC Center of Excellence in Population Aging Research in Sydney.

During his longer research and lecture journey through most larger Australian cities, Klaus F. Zimmermann (Co-Director of POP at UNU-MERIT & Maastricht University & President of the Global Labor Organization, GLO) has visited also the ARC Center of Excellence in Population Aging Research at the University of New South Wales in Sydney. On the invitation of GLO Fellow Alan Woodland, he provided a well-attended timely research seminar on “The Role of Status at Entry for the Labor Market Integration of Migrants” on November 23, 2017.

He also discussed research and policy issues in a reception and thereafter with many participants, including GLO Fellows John Piggott, Robert Holzmann, George Kudrna, Raja Junankar, and Mike Orszag. Some of them he met again at the conference of the Asian and Australasian Society of Labour Economics (AASLE) in Canberra in early December.

At the end of his Australia trip in the middle of December, Zimmermann returned to lovely Sydney to enjoy a few holidays at a near-by beach while also visiting museums, parks and the harbor area…..

In November 2017, Klaus F. Zimmermann (Co-Director of POP at UNU-MERIT & Maastricht University & President of the Global Labor Organization, GLO) has been a Visiting Professor at Macquarie University in Sydney/Australia. He discussed research issues and policy perspectives with faculty including various local GLO Fellows (Zhiming Cheng, Natalia Ponomareva, Kompal Sinha and Ben Wang, among others), David Throsby and Associate Dean for Research, Lucy Taksa. 

On November 22, he provided a well-received Public Lecture in the Lighthouse Lecture Series of Macquarie University  on

GLO President Zimmermann spoke in Wollongong/Australia on November 20, 2017.

Klaus F. Zimmermann (Co-Director of POP at UNU-MERIT & Maastricht University & President of the Global Labor Organization, GLO) visited the University of Wollongong on November 20 to discuss research issues with colleagues and various GLO Fellows. He provided a public lecture in the university, which was strongly attended by a large number of participants from various faculties.

Zimmermann was warmly welcomed and introduced by Executive Dean Charles Areni of the Business School of the University of Wollongong who also chaired the lecture event on “Global Migration Challenges”.  GLO Fellows Silvia Mendolia and Martin O’Brien (both University of Wollongong), among others, contributed significantly to the success of the visit.

Defending Openness: GLO President Zimmermann Meets MP Andrew Leigh in Canberra for an Exchange of Views.

On December 8, 2017, Klaus F. Zimmermann,  President of the Global Labor Organization (GLO) met Andrew Leigh, Member of the Australian Federal Parliament, in his office in Canberra to discuss the merits of openness for Australia and the World, and the mission of the GLO.

GLO Fellow Andrew Leigh is the Shadow Assistant Treasurer and Federal Member for Fenner. Prior to entering the Australian Parliament in 2010, he was a Professor of Economics at the Australian National University (ANU) in Canberra. Andrew Leigh holds a PhD from Harvard University and is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Social Sciences.

As Leigh (see right  below) and Zimmermann agree, global engagement has become a major political fault line around the world, where some argue that trade, investment and migration are threats rather than opportunities. The challenges to an open world are generated by global uncertainty, rising inequality and populism.

In his book, Andrew Leigh argues that Australia’s past prosperity has been the result of engaging with the world, a view that complements the evaluation of global economic progress by the GLO President, and is in line with the GLO mission. Not less, but more openness is required in the future for capital, goods, and people to stabilize and foster prosperity.
