China Research in the GLO Discussion Paper Series: Xi Chen of Yale University and Zhong Zhao of Renmin University are Top Authors

Klaus F. Zimmermann is the President of the Global Labor Organization (GLO) and has taken office in October at Renmin University of China, where he is also an Honorary Professor. This Sunday, he will give a keynote speech on “Recent Labor Market Research on China”.

GLO is publishing an influential Discussion Paper series. While Chinese scholars are 4% of all GLO Fellows and Affiliates, the share of papers who have covered issues of the Chinese labor market is 5.5%. Below they are listed with direct link to the freely downloadable papers. It is the objective of various activities of GLO this year in China, see the China program page, to increase the number of GLO members and the number of the Discussion Papers covering China significantly.

The two top GLO authors among GLO Discussion Paper authors are Xi Chen from Yale University, who is also the GLO Cluster Lead on “Environment and Human Capital“, and Zhong Zhao of Renmin University of China.They have contributed both equal numbers of papers. They stand together for nearly 60% of all research.

Michele Bruni, EU Resident Expert and Team Leader, EU-China SPRP and based in Beijing has worked on the demographic situation of China. His GLO Discussion Paper No. 222 on China (see link below) is summarized as:

“China still lags behind Europe along the path of the demographic transition and therefore is still much younger. However, due to the speed with which the fertility rate dropped and life expectancy increased, China’s ageing process will proceed at a very fast rate and around the middle of the century the population of China is projected to be as old as that of France and the UK and older than that of the USA. The paper tries to evaluate the labor market and welfare implications of this process, also by an economic indicator of dependency and socioeconomic burden.”

GLO President Zimmermann engages in policy and research exchange in Beijing

In October 2018, Klaus F. Zimmermann has taken office at the School of Labor and Human Resources at Renmin University of China (Beijing). He is Honorary Professor of this University, operates from UNU-MERIT/Maastricht and is President of the Global Labor Organization (GLO). In Beijing, Zimmermann provides this week keynote speeches at three conferences (i) the CIER seasonal policy conference on analyzing China’s labor market, (ii) the joint Renmin-GLO research conference on “The Chinese Labor Market” and (iii) The “Third Annual Conference of Labor Economics in China” at the Beijing Capital University of Economics and Business. Next week, he also provides research seminar presentations at Renmin University of China and Beijing Normal University.

Renmin University and GLO have just published the program of their forthcoming  conference on the Chinese labor market. Social Protection Reforms: Where to go in China and the EU?

Demographic change is a huge challenge for many countries around the globe and calls for social protection initiatives in particular in China and the European Union (EU). Klaus F. Zimmermann, President of the Global Labor Organization (GLO), and currently Visiting Professor at Renmin University of China, participated on October 12 in a workshop of the “EU-China Social Protection Reform Project” in Beijing. Measures in the EU and China have to be taken now to be effective in time, but the way to go is still subject of debate. International exchange helps for a better understanding of the issue.

Zimmermann used this occasion to join forces again with Michele Bruni, EU Resident Expert and Team Leader, EU-China SPRP. Bruni is also a GLO Fellow, a renowned migration expert and an old friend. Both discussed in separate talks joint initiatives to promote solutions for the world-wide migration challenges to come over the next decades.

Abstract: We propose a regression-adjusted matched difference-in-differences framework to estimate non-pecuniary returns to adult education. This approach combines kernel matching with entropy balancing to account for selection bias and sorting on gains. Using data from the German SOEP, we evaluate the effect of work-related training, which represents the largest portion of adult education in OECD countries, on individual social capital. Training increases participation in civic, political, and cultural activities while not crowding out social participation. Results are robust against a variety of potentially confounding explanations. These findings imply positive externalities from work-related training over and above the well-documented labor market effects.

GLO President Zimmermann visits Renmin University of China in October 2018

Renmin University of China, Beijing, is one of the most prominent and influential of the country. Since 2006, Klaus F. Zimmermann is Honorary Professor of the university and has visited the institution a larger number of times (see for more details). He now just took office at the School of Labor and Human Resources of Renmin University, and will be present there all over October to meet for research and policy events and to discuss issues of joint interest with colleagues. Zimmermann, President of the Global Labor Organization (GLO), Co-Director of the population research group POP at UNU-MERIT and Honorary Professor at Maastricht University, will also provide a keynote speech to a joint GLO-Renmin University conference on 20 and 21 October 2018.

New scientific book: Wealth and homeownership – gender and family perspectives

Two Fellows of the Global Labor Organization (GLO) have just published a new study on “Wealth and Homeownership: Women, Men and Families” with the prominent publisher Palgrave Macmillan. In this timely book, Mariacristina Rossi and Eva Sierminska analyze the complex relationship between gender, wealth and homeownership. By providing a conceptual framework to insert homeownership and housing decisions within an economic rationale, the authors explore how gender and family types have shaped wealth accumulation and homeownership.​

Highlight of the Year 2018: EBES-25 & GLO Conference in Berlin – update

The 25th Conference of the Eurasia Business and Economics Society (EBES) took place on May 23-25, 2018 in Berlin/Germany. It was jointly organized with the Global Labor Organization (GLO) and hosted by the FOM University of Applied Sciences in their Berlin study center. During the conference, 316 papers by 525 researchers from 60 countries were presented. On May 23, GLO had organized three sessions reviewing research on (i) Africa, (ii) well-being and (ii) the research agenda of a selection of various GLO clusters presented by the GLO Cluster Leads. EBES has given the 2018 EBES Fellow Award to GLO President Klaus F. Zimmermann.

GLO President Zimmermann at GLO – supported conferences in 2018

GLO is the Global Labor Organization; Klaus F. Zimmermann is the GLO President.

Zimmermann will participate and speak at the forthcoming 2018 conferences (see below for more details): at Renmin University (October 20-21) and visit Beijing for most of October; Hong Kong (October 31 – November 2); Xiamen (December 8-9); Seoul (December 13-15) and Mumbai (December 19-21).

Zimmermann will also speak at the African Economic Conference 2018 (December 3-5) in Kigali, Rwanda. The African Economic Conference, a collaborative annual event hosted by the African Development Bank, Economic Commission for Africa, and the United Nations Development Program will meet this year on the topic: “Regional and Continental Integration for Africa’s Development”.

European leaders still do not find a proper response to the refugee issue. Nevertheless, Europeans wish to help those fleeing violence and war.

EU leaders again failed to reach progress on the burden sharing allocation of refugees across member states in their meeting in Salzburg this week (19-20/09/2018).

Nevertheless, Europeans are more open to help those fleeing violence and war than in other parts of the world. The chart below provided by statista on the basis of PEW Research Center data shows this. In key countries like Sweden, Germany and Spain over 80% of the respondents of a survey are open to support this position with Hungary as an exception. But the PEW study shows that Europeans disapprove the handling of the issue by policymakers.

Emigration and the subjective well-being of those staying behind: New research

Full Abstract:
We offer the first global perspective on the well-being consequences of emigration for those staying behind using several subjective well-being measures (evaluations of best possible life, positive affect, stress, and depression). Using the Gallup World Poll data for 114 countries during 2009–2011, we find that having family members abroad is associated with greater evaluative well-being and positive affect, and receiving remittances is linked with further increases in evaluative well-being, especially in poorer contexts—both across and within countries. We also document that having household members abroad is linked with increased stress and depression, which are not offset by remittances. The out-migration of family members appears less traumatic in countries where migration is more common, indicating that people in such contexts might be able to cope better with separation. Overall, subjective well-being measures, which reflect both material and non-material aspects of life, furnish additional insights and a well-rounded picture of the consequences of emigration on migrant family members staying behind relative to standard outcomes employed in the literature, such as the left-behind’s consumption, income, or labor market outcomes.
