The 25th Conference of the Eurasia Business and Economics Society (EBES) will take place on May 23-25, 2018 in Berlin/Germany. It is jointly organized with the Global Labor Organization (GLO) and hosted by the FOM University in their Berlin study center.  A previous announcement.

Researchers are cordially invited to submit abstracts or papers for consideration for presentation at the 25th EBES Conference. The event will take place on May 23-25, 2018 at the FOM University of Applied Sciences in Berlin, Germany. It is jointly organized with the GLO (Global Labor Organization) and hosted by the FOM University of Applied Sciences with the support of the Istanbul Economic Research Association.

The conference aims to bring together many distinguished researchers from all over the world. Participants will find opportunities for presenting new research, exchanging information, and discussing current issues. Although a focus is on Europe and Asia, all papers from major economics, finance, and business fields – theoretical or empirical – are highly welcome.

Publication Opportunities

Qualified papers are offered to be published in the EBES journals (no submission or publication fees). EBES journals (Eurasian Business Review and Eurasian Economic Review) are published by Springer and indexed in the Scopus, Emerging Sources Citation Index (Web of Science), EconLit, EBSCO Discovery Service, ProQuest, ABI/INFORM, Business Source,  International Bibliography of the Social Sciences (IBSS), OCLC, Research Papers in Economics (RePEc), Summon by ProQuest, TOC Premier, Cabell’s Directory, Ulrich’s Periodicals Directory, and Google Scholar.

Also all accepted abstracts will be published electronically in the Conference Program and the Abstract Book (with an ISBN number). It will be distributed to all conference participants at the conference via USB. Although the submission of full papers is not required, all the submitted full papers will also be included in the conference proceedings in the USB. After the conference, participants will also have the opportunity to send their paper to be published in the Springer’s series Eurasian Studies in Business and Economics (no submission or publication fees).

The conference proceedings will also be sent to Thomson Reuters in order to be reviewed for coverage in its Conference Proceedings Citation Index. Please note that the 10th, 11th, 12th, 13th, 14th, 15th and 17th EBES Conference Proceedings were all accepted for inclusion in the Conference Proceedings Citation Index. 16th, 18th and subsequent conference proceedings are in progress.

Zimmermann aus Australien in Bonn zurück. Horst Köhler ehrt den GLO – Präsidenten

Der Bonner Wirtschaftswissenschaftler Klaus F. Zimmermann (Prof. em. der Universität Bonn und Ko-Direktor von POP an UNU-MERIT in Maastricht und Honorarprofessor der Universität Maastricht) ist am 19. Dezember 2017 von einer zweimonatigen Forschungs- und Vortragsreise durch die Universitäten Australiens nach Bonn zurückgekehrt. Dabei arbeitete er mit einem Forschungspreis als Eminent Research Scholar an der Melbourne University und nahm im November auch eine Gastprofessur an der Macquarie University wahr. Dabei hielt er öffentliche Vorlesungen und Forschungsseminare an der University of Western Australia (Perth), der Melbourne University, der University of Wollongong, der Macquarie University (Sydney), der University of New South Wales (Sydney), der University of Adelaide, der University of Queensland (Brisbane) und der Monash University (Melbourne) und hielt Vorträge bei Konferenzen der Asian and Australasian Society of Labour Economics (AASLE) and the Australian Labour Market Research Group (ALMR) in Canberra.

Zimmermann traf überall auf volle Säle und ein interessiertes Publikum, sowohl unter Wissenschaftlern wie in der Politik. Das Interesse an der von ihm als Präsident geleiteten Global Labor Organization (GLO) in Australien nahm daraufhin sprunghaft zu.

In der Mitte seiner Reise durch Australien feierte er am 2. Dezember 2017 im privaten Kreise seinen 65. Geburtstag, bewußt ohne breites öffentliches Aufsehen. Denn der 65. Geburtstag wird häufig immer noch als Abschluß eines Arbeitslebens angesehen. Genau dieses Signal wollte er aber nicht geben. Vielmehr ist mit seiner langfristigen Präsenz in Forschung und Beratung, gerade in Deutschland, weiter zu rechnen.

Dennoch ereichten ihn viele freundliche, herzliche und anerkennende Geburtstagsgrüße und die besten Wünsche für seine zukünftige Arbeit und die Entwicklung der GLO. Diese hat er dankbar beantwortet. Ein anerkennendes Schreiben des ehemaligen Bundespräsidenten Horst Köhler an den GLO – Präsidenten (s. unten freigegeben) hat ihn besonders gefreut.

GLO President Zimmermann: Eminent Scholar Melbourne University, November – December 2017.

Klaus F. Zimmermann (Co-Director of POP at UNU-MERIT & Maastricht University), had been granted the prestigious Australian Eminent Research Scholar Award. He was resident in November and December 2017 at The Melbourne Institute of Applied Economic and Social Research of the University of Melbourne, Australia. In November 2017, he was also visiting Macquarie University. Zimmermann is also the President of the Global Labor Organization (GLO).

During his visit, Zimmermann gave research seminars, informal talks and public lectures in Perth, Melbourne, Wollongong, Sydney, Adelaide, Brisbane and Canberra at the University of Western Australia, Melbourne University, the University of Wollongong, Macquarie University, the University of New South Wales, the University of Adelaide, the University of Queensland, conferences of the Asian and Australasian Society of Labour Economics (AASLE) and the Australian Labour Market Research Conference (ALMR), and at Monash University.

Most of his visit to Australia, Zimmermann worked at The Melbourne Institute of the University of Melbourne, in particular with his host, Prof. John Haisken-DeNew. The joint project of the two includes work on migration to Australia. Haisken-DeNew has made a remarkable and global career, with an education in Canada, a PhD thesis with Zimmermann as supervisor at the University of Munich and collaborative work in Mannheim, Munich and Berlin, and key academic positions at the German Economic Institute (DIW Berlin) and as a tenured Full Professor at the University of Bochum, Germany. He is also an Adjunct Professor at McMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. Haisken-DeNew and Zimmermann have a long list of joint research papers and projects, including their co-authored paper “Native Wage Impacts of Foreign Labor: A Random Effects Panel Analysis” in the Journal of Population Economics of 1994 that got 313 Google Scholar cites.

On November 16, Zimmermann gave a public lecture at the Melbourne Institute of Melbourne University on “European Migration: Challenges and Perspectives with a Global View”. Over his visiting period, he had research talks with a larger number of Melbourne University and Melbourne Institute Faculty and visitors, among them many GLO Fellows. Among those were Hilary Hoynes and GLO Fellow Jan van Ours, Barbara Broadway, Diana Contreras Suarez, Nicolas Herault, Jan Kabatek, Inga Lass, Kevin Staub and Mark Wooden.

During a period of two months, Zimmermann was honored by an impressive tour through the academic institutions of Australia with a very warm welcome and respect everywhere. He returned to Bonn on December 19, 2017 with gratitude for the experiences and strong impressions of a wonderful, well organized country with an excellent and ambitious academic community.

Zimmermann spoke at a conference of Asian and Australasian Labor Economists in Canberra

The Asian and Australasian Society of Labour Economics (AASLE) was created to promote research and cooperation in Labour and Applied Economics across Asia and Australasia. The inaugural conference of the AASLE brought together from 7-9 December 2017 over 400 researchers and over 120 papers from around the world. It was hosted by the Australian National University Research School of Economics in Canberra, Australia. The event has been impressive and was a huge success.

The Global Labor Organization (GLO) had supported this initiative and also organized a special GLO session chaired by GLO Country Lead Australia, John Haisken-DeNew (Melbourne University). A large number of GLO Fellows were participating in the event and were presenting papers in various sessions.

The event was organized by Christian Dustmann, University College London; Bob Gregory, Australian National University and GLO; Xin Meng, Australian National University and GLO; John Tang, Australian National University; Matthew Gray, Australian National University.

Zimmermann delivered keynote at Australian Labour Economists event (ALMR) in Canberra

The 28th Australian Labour Market Research (ALMR) Workshop brought together high-quality labour economic research that engages actively with policy makers. The workshop took place on 6-7 December 2017 at The Realm Hotel, 18 National Circuit Barton, Canberra, Australia. The event was organized by GLO Fellow Boyd Hunter (Centre for Aboriginal Economic Policy Research, Australian National University).

Zimmermann spoke at the University of Queensland, Brisbane

As part of his travel during his tenure as Eminent Scholar and Visiting Professor at Melbourne University and Macquarie University, Klaus F. Zimmermann (Co-Director of POP at UNU-MERIT & Maastricht University & President of the Global Labor Organization, GLO) has also visited Brisbane and spoke at the University of Queensland.

On November 30, 2017 Zimmermann gave a research seminar on “Arsenic Contamination of Drinking Water and Mental Health” in the Applied Economics Seminar Program of the School of Economics perfectly arranged by the Seminar Organizer, Rigissa Megalokonomou. Zimmermann interacted with a strong group of interested and competent applied development and labor economists and econometricians. He enjoyed and benefited from the discussions with Tina Rampino, Anton Pak and GLO Fellows Rigissa Megalokonomou, Jonas Fooken, Nancy Kong, Christiern Rose, and Haishan Yuan, among others.

Zimmermann in Adelaide: The Future of Government & Migration Challenges

During his tenure as Eminent Scholar and Visiting Professor at Melbourne University and Macquarie University, Klaus F. Zimmermann (Co-Director of POP at UNU-MERIT & Maastricht University & President of the Global Labor Organization, GLO) has also been in Adelaide. He had been invited by Kostas Mavromaras, President of the Economic Society of Australia (SA). Mavromaras has also been the Director of the National Institute of Labour Studies and a Professor at Flinders University. He his also a GLO-Fellow and a forthcoming Professor of Economics at the University of Adelaide.

On Monday, November 27, Zimmermann spoke to over 40 government staff members from various departments of the local Government of South Australia (SA) headed Stuart Hocking, Deputy Chief Executive of the Department of Treasury & Finance, SA, about the future of government in the face of globalization. In this exchange, he was supported by Kostas Mavromaras.

In his Public Lecture on November 28 in the Napier Lecture Theatre, the lecture hall of the University of Adelaide, Zimmermann spoke about “The European Migration Challenge”. He was introduced by Professor Gareth Miles, the Head of the School of Economics, who also moderated the discussion. Zimmermann also used the occasion to exchange views with further various distinguished individuals, including Professor Christopher Findlay, Executive Dean, Faculty of the Professions, Nigar Hashimzade (University of Durham), and GLO Fellows Stephane Mahuteau, Eran Binenbaum and Zhang Wei.
