IZA Journals

I have committed a large amount of my time to the development of competitive international research journals. As the Director of IZA, I was once given the responsibility to create academic publication outlets.

The following journals were created; for all I have been the Editor-in-Chief in 2012-2016:

  • IZA Journal of Labor Economics
  • IZA Journal of Labor Policy
  • IZA Journal of Migration
  • IZA Journal of European Labor Studies
  • IZA Journal of Labor and Development

Below I review the history of the journals, list my published articles in the various outlets, and link to other parts of the project.

HISTORY

  • 2012

To foster labor economics and to support the research agenda of the institute, IZA Director Klaus F. Zimmermann created 2012 on the demand of the Deutsche Post Foundation with SpringerOpen five new free open access online journals: IZA Journal of Labor Economics, IZA Journal of Labor Policy, IZA Journal of Migration, IZA Journal of European Labor Studies, and IZA Journal of Labor and Development.

  • 2016

Klaus F. Zimmermann left IZA and the IZA network on March 1, 2016 in disagreement about an imposed IZA restructuring.

  • 2017

On 1st April 2017, IZA Journal of European Labor Studies and IZA Journal of Labor Policy were merged as IZA Journal of Labor Policy. At the same time, IZA Journal of Migration and IZA Journal of Labor and Development were merged under the new name IZA Journal of Development and Migration. This was unfortunate, since IZA Journal of European Labor Studies and IZA Journal of Migration have been very successful outlets, already under consideration for SSCI, and IZA Journal of Development and Migration was part of a joint mission with the World Bank to bring labor and development issues in perspective.

  • 2019

The IZA Journals “… ceased to be published by Springer as of the 1st April 2019. The IZA journal series will continue to publish with Sciendo. Published volumes of the journals will remain fully accessible via SpringerLink.” Springer.

  • 2023

“The IZA Open Access Journal Series, consisting of (i) IZA Journal of Labor Economics, (ii) IZA Journal of Labor Policy, and (iii) IZA Journal of Development and Migration, will be closed in 2023.

When the Journals were launched more than a decade ago in 2012, IZA was a pioneer in establishing the principles of open access publishing in economics to increase the reach of new research findings. The intended goal of promoting the culture of open access publishing has been reached, as evidenced by the fact that a number of other journals have now adopted this option.

The IZA Journals will no longer accept new submissions. All published content will be available online free of charge. We convey our sincere thanks to our editors, our authors, and our reviewers for contributing to the journals’ remarkable success in the past years.” IZA
